Freestyler

The Game

Freestyler is a retro parkour game developed in 36 hours for the Hagenberg Game Jam. The goal is to build up momentum and skate through the city on your Heelys – remember those? To build up momentum, you have to land at the right angle or use a boost.

Higher momentum means bigger jumps. While you’re in the air, you can perform tricks which earn you points. The higher your momentum, the higher the multiplier for your score.

While we are continuing development on Freestyler, you can try the game jam build here:

The Development

Freestyler is the second project for which I worked in the Godot game engine. There are many things that Godot is excellent at, for example, I think the UI system is quite easy to use. There are also a lot of predefined nodes to speed up your workflow (e.g. for basic platformer movement). The more I work in Godot, the more I like it – I highly suggest checking it out!

The design philosophy behind the game is pretty straight forward: playing the game should feel satisfying and cool. Everything else follows from that – the interface, particle effects, narration and so on.

We submitted the game at the game jam under the name “Götschka 2077”, which is a very specific joke that’s not so easy to explain. As we decided to keep developing the game into a full game, we quickly changed the name.

The Future

We decided to make Freestyler into a full game, you can follow along the process by following us on itch.io – we’ll post updates on the development progress there from time to time!
