The Film
Those Bleeding Humans is the story of Hanna, a young girl who suffers from headaches when she’s exposed to the sun. When she encounters a vampire, he convinces her, that she’s a vampire as well and that this is the reason for her headaches. Hanna gladly accepts this explanation, but soon enough she discovers that the life of a vampire requires some drastic compromises.
The Process
Those Boring Bleeding Humans is an animated short film created during my master’s. I worked on it together with the fantastic Mrs. Jascha Hanisch. Working on and off, the film took about 1.5 years to complete.
We split our responsibilities quite clearly: Jascha was in charge of the character design and all the animation. My part was writing the screen play, painting backgrounds and eventually editing the whole thing together.
During our work in parallel, we met up regularly to discuss our progress and all kinds of issues that popped up along the way. There’s one scene we reworked about 5 times until it finally felt right. In total, we drew about 300 frames for the storyboard.
In the end, I was resembling a vampire myself: pale, rings under the eyes and hissing as soon as a ray of sunlight touched my skin while I was crouching before my computer screen. But we pushed through.
Unfortunately, I can’t yet share the whole film publicly, as we are still submitting it to film festivals. As yet, it was already screened at the Best Austrian Animation Festival (BAAF) in Vienna.
